Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight

Two clutch shots and one defensive stop in the final two minutes enabled the Muhlenberg women's basketball team to eke out a 56-54 home win against Ursinus.

With their third straight win and eighth in the last 10 games, the Mules (10-9, 8-6) moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Centennial Conference. They are a game ahead in the loss column of both Swarthmore - their next opponent - and Dickinson.

Senior Emily O'Mahoney (12 points), sophomore Amanda Gorski (career-high 12 points) and sophomore Margaux Eripret (10 points) all scored in double figures for Muhlenberg.

Neither team led by more than five points in the closely contested game. The Mules took the lead for good late in the third quarter at 43-39 when O'Mahoney (pictured above) drove in for back-to-back layups. Another layup by O'Mahoney with 4:26 left in the fourth made it 51-46, but the Bears (7-13, 6-9) scored the next four points.

With less than two minutes left, the Mules called timeout after a rocky offensive possession and inbounded the ball in front of their bench. The inbounds pass got loose, but sophomore Tara Szawaluk chased it down in the corner, dribbled to her left and swished a three to give Muhlenberg some breathing room.

After an Ursinus free throw made it 54-51, sophomore Mikaela McGarvey drove in for a lefty layup with 1:08 on the clock, extending the lead back to five.

The Bears got back to within two on a three-point play and had the final possession with 10.7 seconds left after a Mule miss. The Muhlenberg defense collapsed on Ursinus' leading scorer and forced a tough shot that went off the rim. The Bears got the offensive rebound, but it was as the final buzzer sounded.

Szawaluk finished with a season-high 9 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting. Gorski topped her four-day-old career high with her 12 points and added 4 steals. Eripret added 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to her 10 points, and McGarvey contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds.

Muhlenberg swept the season series from Ursinus for the 11th time in the last 12 years and reached double figures in victories for the 28th consecutive season, extending its College record for all sports.
