Baseball Wins Opener

The Muhlenberg baseball team came back from an early 2-0 deficit to win its season opener, 6-4 vs. Gwynedd Mercy at the Gallaudet Bison Classic.

Sophomore Donovan Brady, making his Mule debut, struck out six in 4 2/3 innings to earn the win. Sophomore Will Nomura came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired the final hitter with the tying runs on base to earn the save.

Muhlenberg allowed two runs in the first inning but put up consecutive two-run frames in the third, fourth and fifth.

A two-run single by junior Robert Cappadona tied the score in the third after senior Brenden Weiss and junior Cameron Miller opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

In the fourth, the Mules had two outs and nobody on before sophomore Ryan Hebert drew a walk. Consecutive doubles by junior Skyler Petrie and Weiss brought in two runs.

Two-out hitting was key in the fifth again. Cappadona was on first with two outs before Muhlenberg took advantage of a dropped foul pop to score what proved to be the winning runs. Senior Sam Arnold drove in the first with a single down the line, and Petrie walked with the bases loaded to force home another.

Senior Matthew D'Ambrosia started for the Mules and struck out five batters in four innings to move into a tie for third on the all-time list with 184 career whiffs. Walks and a pop fly that fell in for a hit contributed to the two runs in the first, but D'Ambrosia allowed only one hit the rest of his outing.

Brady kept the Griffins (1-3) off the board in his first three innings and got some help from sophomore catcher Thomas Rodgers, who threw out a runner attempting to steal.

Arnold (pictured above) and Weiss each had a pair of hits.
