Baseball Picks Up Key Road Win

Senior RJ Hennessey threw a complete-game eight-hitter and was supported by a 15-hit attack as the Muhlenberg baseball team improved its playoff chances with a 13-4 win at Dickinson.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Mules (18-15, 8-7) are in sole possession of fifth place in the Centennial Conference, a game behind Dickinson and Haverford. The top four teams make the playoffs. Muhlenberg is scheduled to host Dickinson (22-11, 9-6) on Friday before playing a doubleheader at ninth-place Gettysburg on Saturday.

Hennessey (pictured above) allowed three earned runs and struck out four in his second career nine-inning complete game. He retired 13 straight batters from the fourth through eighth innings en route to his 11th career win.

Junior John Serruto and senior Seth Wasserman each had three hits for the Mules. Wasserman drove in three runs, as did senior Chris Grillo and junior Jack Avallone. The top three hitters in the lineup, Serruto, sophomore Cameron Miller and Grillo, all scored three times.

Muhlenberg jumped all over a Dickinson pitcher who came in third in the CC with a 1.59 ERA and hadn't given up more than three earned runs in any game this year. The Mules knocked him out in the third after scoring five runs in the first two innings.

Avallone's two-out, two-run single brought home the first runs in the first, and a two-run triple by Grillo was the big hit in the second.

Wasserman delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth and recorded two hits in the ninth, when the Mules scored six runs to turn the game into a runaway. He led off the big inning with a double and capped it with a two-run single.

Senior Matt Riebesell drove in a run and also hit his 15th double of the season, moving to within one of tying the school record.

Grillo closed to within one assist of tying the program's career record and moved into a tie for third place on the all-time hits list with 177.
