The Muhlenberg volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 record in the 21st Buttermaker Tournament by defeating Neumann and Stockton on the second day of competition.
The Mules swept Neumann in three sets before coming from behind to outlast Stockton in five, improving to 8-1 on the season.
In the first match, Muhlenberg "reversed the curse," breaking a string of three straight Saturday-morning Buttermaker losses. The Mules built big leads in each of the first two sets before fending off late Neumann runs to win both, 25-21. They closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Among the Mules' statistical leaders were junior
Maggie Enestvedt with 13 kills, senior
Shannon Hubert with 32 assists and 9 digs, and sophomore
Maya Illovsky with 20 digs and a career-high 8 assists.
After three straight sweeps and a 25-11 win in the first set of the Stockton match, it looked like Muhlenberg might breeze through the weekend. But the Ospreys - coached by Muhlenberg Hall of Famer Allison (Verduin) Walker '00 - had other ideas. They won the next two sets, both 25-19. Muhlenberg took an early lead in the fourth set and held on to win, 25-21.
The decisive fifth set was tied 2-2 before junior
Laura Boll served a pair of aces in a 5-0 run. Stockton got as close as three, at 9-6, but a pair of kills each by Boll and senior
Kelly Tornetta kept the Mules in front en route to a 15-8 win.
Tornetta and Enestvedt each recorded four kills in the final set and finished with 16 and 15, respectively. Boll added 12 kills and 5 aces. Hubert (12), Illovsky (11), Tornetta (10) and sophomore
Rebecca Shear (10) all hit double figures in digs.
Hubert's 134 assists in the Buttermaker Tournament put her just 32 away from 3,000 for her career. Enestvedt led the Mules with 40 kills in the four matches, hitting .292.
