The Muhlenberg volleyball team continued its run of success - and heartstopping matches - to start the 2018 season, coming from behind to win in five sets at Scranton.
It was the third five-set match of the season for the Mules (4-1), who
received 60 votes in this week's Division III poll and return home to host the Buttermaker Tournament this weekend. Muhlenberg dropped the first and third sets by identical 25-22 scores, equalizing both times by taking the next set, 25-20. A 15-10 win in the fifth set secured the win.
Senior
Shannon Hubert (pictured above) finished with 48 assists and 24 digs, surpassing the 1,000-dig mark for her career. With 2,830 assists and 1,003 digs, she is only the second player in program history to reach quadruple figures in both.
Junior
Laura Boll led the Muhlenberg attack with 17 kills, and she added a career-high 5 aces. Seniors
Kelly Tornetta (14) and
Erica Schultz (10) also hit double figures in kills.
Facing defeat in the fourth set, the Mules were tied 15-15 before taking control with five straight points on the serve of sophomore
Kendall Applegate, who punctuated the run with a service ace. Boll finished off the set with a kill.
In the decisive fifth set, Muhlenberg jumped out to a 5-2 lead, then ran off four straight points after the Royal closed to within 6-5. Boll had 4 kills in the set, all assisted by Hubert.
