Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Record Men's Lacrosse Season Ends in ECAC Final

A record-breaking season for the Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team ended with a thrilling ECAC championship game in which the Mules came back time and time again but ultimately fell to Stockton, 14-12.

The Mules (11-7), who broke school records for wins, goals and assists in a season, played from behind for the entire game. They came back from one-goal deficits three times in the early part of the game to draw even at 3-3 midway through the second quarter. The Ospreys (12-4) scored the next three goals to open up a 6-3 advantage, and although the Mules never tied the score, they closed to within a goal twice in the third quarter, at 6-5 and 8-7.

Stockton appeared to pull away when it ran off the next four goals to extend its lead to 12-7 early in the fourth. But Muhlenberg wasn't done yet, responding with three consecutive goals to cut the gap to two when sophomore Bobby McLoughlin hit cutting freshman Brandon Moyer for a man-up goal at the 5:31 mark.

The Ospreys stopped the Mules' momentum by scoring just 20 seconds later, however, and held on for the championship.

Earning all-tournament honors for Muhlenberg were freshman Ethan Grossman, sophomores Frankie Feaster, Garrett Pope and Scott Fayan and junior Steve Chenworth.

Grossman finished his remarkable rookie season with three goals and an assist for his seventh hat trick. He finished with 73 points, smashing the previous mark of 43, and became the first Mule to score 40 goals in a season.

Feaster tied a school record that he set earlier in the season by winning 22 faceoffs, adding to his school-record season and career totals. He also scored a goal and picked up 17 ground balls, tying a career high and breaking by seven the previous school record of 131 in a season.

Fayan scored three goals on just five shots for his third hat trick of the season. He ended up second on the team with 26 goals.

Pope made 17 saves in goal to wrap up his first season as a starter with 184 stops, the second-most by a Muhlenberg goalie since men's lacrosse was reinstated in 2003. Pope was especially brilliant in the first quarter, making eight saves to keep the Mules in the game.

Chenworth had a strong game as a defensive middie, scooping up a career-high six ground balls (to go along with the four he had in the semifinal win against SUNY Canton) and causing a turnover.

Freshman Michael Kowal scored twice for his first career multiple-goal game, while classmate Alexander Giaquinto recorded two assists for his first multiple-point game.

Seniors Joey Hess, Dylan Moyer and Brian Lafond played in their final game for the Mules. Hess notched a goal and an assist during Muhlenberg's fourth-quarter rally, while Moyer (pictured above) picked up a season-high four ground balls and caused a turnover.
