The Muhlenberg baseball team came close to its second bases-loaded, ninth-inning go-ahead hit in the last 24 hours, but a fine defensive play sealed a 5-4 win for Dickinson.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mules (10-11, 3-1), who were attempting to open up 4-0 in the Centennial Conference for the first time ever.
With his team trailing by a run, sophomore
John Serruto led off the top of the ninth with a single. After an error and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, senior
Eric Reitmeyer hit a line drive up the middle that had two-run single written all over it, but the Red Devil shortstop snagged the ball to end the game.
Muhlenberg scored all its runs in the sixth inning after falling into a 3-0 hole. With two outs and runners at the corners, junior
Kenny Freid hit a two-run double. Sophomore
Sam Arnold (pictured above) tied the game with another double, and sophomore
Brenden Weiss singled in Arnold to give the Mules their first lead.
Dickinson (6-12, 3-1) tied the game in the seventh and scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
