Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Ties Record Start

The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 for the second time in program history by defeating Rhodes 10-6.

The Mules tied the school record for their best start to a season, matching the start to the 2003 season, the first year after the program was revived as a varsity sport. The four-game streak is also tied for the second longest win streak, also accomplished in 2004.

The win also came against a strong Rhodes team that finished the 2017 season with a 14-3 record and won the Southern Athletic Association regular-season title. Entering today's game, the Lynx (3-1) had outscored their opponents 47-20 this season.

For the third straight game, sophomore goalie Garrett Pope registered a new career-best save total. He stopped 18 shots in the game, including 10 in the first half and five in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Ethan Grossman led the Mule attack with three points on a goal and two assists. Senior Niko Del Moro and sophomore Scott Fayan each netted two goals, and sophomore Bobby McLoughlin assisted on two scores.

Del Moro put Muhlenberg ahead early with a score just 1:37 into the game, and Fayan followed four minutes later with a goal off an assist from Grossman. The Lynx responded with a goal of their own, but Del Moro answered back with his second goal off a pass from McLoughlin, giving the Mules a 3-1 lead after the first period.

Senior Joey Hess carried the momentum into the second period, scoring 37 seconds into the quarter, and sophomore Drew Rafferty found the back of the net four minutes later to make it 5-1. Junior Steve Chenworth then added his first goal of the season before Rhodes ended the run with its second score.

Grossman netted his first goal to start the second half, and following a Lynx score, Fayan scored his second of the game with freshman Nate Emrick assisting. Emrick then scored a goal of his own two minutes later with Grossman assisting, but Rhodes added the final tally of the third period.

The Muhlenberg defense took over from there, forcing eight turnovers in the final period. Pope (pictured above) kept Rhodes off the scoreboard with four saves over 13 scoreless minutes. Freshman Alexander Giaquinto scored his first career goal late in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.

Sophomore Frankie Feaster led the Mules with five ground balls, and freshman Christopher Hyde picked up four ground balls. Junior Nolan Robbins and sophomore Frank Caterina each caused two turnovers to lead the defense.

The Mules have allowed only 23 goals through four games, the fewest total through four games since 2003.
