Down to its final out and down two runs, the Muhlenberg baseball team scored once and put the tying run 90 feet away but eventually lost to Scranton, 5-4.
Freshman Robert Cappadonna led off the top of the ninth with a walk and went to second on a one-out single by junior
Matt Riebesell. One out later, junior
Jon Capra plated Cappadonna with a single through the hole. A walk loaded the bases before the game ended on a strikeout.
The Mules (7-9) overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring all three of their runs in the third and fourth innings. Sophomore
Brenden Weiss led off the third with a single - one of his three hits - and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Chris Grillo. Cappadonna had a bunt single in the inning.
In the fourth, Capra
(pictured above) and sophomore
Sam Arnold came home on a two-out, two-run double by Weiss.
After the Royals (7-5) tied the game with two unearned runs in the fifth, Muhlenberg loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but could not push any runs across.
Capra and Riebesell had two hits apiece for the Mules.
Junior
RJ Hennessey, one of three pitchers used by Muhlenberg as it prepares its staff for the beginning of Centennial Conference play this weekend, struck out five batters in his three-inning stint.
