Baseball Wins in Extras to Move to 3-0

Junior Stephen Koester hit a RBI double in the 10th inning to provide Muhlenberg baseball with a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Marymount.

The Mules move to 3-0 for the 11th time in program history, including three times since 2012. The three wins earned Muhlenberg a trophy as champion of the Gallaudet Bison Baseball Classic.

With the game tied at 1-1 through seven innings, sophomore John Serruto singled with one out in the eighth. Sophomore Billy Brittingham then homered to right to put Muhlenberg in front 3-1.

The Saints (1-2) rallied back for three runs in their half of the eighth, taking a 4-3 lead. The Mules then put two runners on with one out in the ninth before senior Eric Reitmeyer singled through the right side, scoring junior Justin Revel from second and tying the game.

Freshman Alec Andrews forced extra innings by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth. Brittingham was hit by a pitch to start the 10th, and junior Matt Riebesell moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Koester then roped a double down the left field line, allowing Brittingham to cross home plate for the game-winning run.

Andrews again tossed a perfect inning in the bottom half of the frame to preserve the victory, the first of his collegiate career. He also finished with three strikeouts.

Sophomore Sam Arnold smashed his first career home run to give Muhlenberg a 1-0 lead in the second inning. He finished the day 2-for-3 with two walks. Junior Chris Grillo doubled to lead off the game, his 21st of his career.

Senior Timmy Pilrun tossed seven strong innings in his first start of the season, allowing only one earned run and four hits to go with eight strikeouts. The Mules' three starting pitchers combined to allow only three earned runs in 19 innings on their opening weekend.
