The Muhlenberg volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches on Senior Day, falling to McDaniel before defeating DeSales.
The result against McDaniel put the Mules (18-7, 5-3) in fourth place in the Centennial Conference with one week to go in the regular season. Muhlenberg needs to win one of its final two matches (home vs. Swarthmore and at Washington College) to qualify for the CC playoffs.
Before the DeSales match, Muhlenberg honored seniors
Shannon Hubert,
Erica Schultz and
Kelly Tornetta, who rank among the program's all-time leaders in every statistical category and have averaged more than 20 wins per season during the careers.
Two of the seniors added to their legacies in the DeSales match. Hubert set a school record with 57 assists, and Tornetta tied a career high with 21 kills and added 24 digs, becoming the first Mule hitter with a 20-20 match since 2005.
Schultz added 8 kills and 4 blocks and combined with junior
Tara Register for a block on match point.
Juniors
Laura Boll (14) and
Madison Forrest (12) also reached double figures in kills against DeSales, with Forrest hitting .458. In addition to Tornetta, Hubert (21) and sophomore
Maya Illovsky (20) recorded at least 20 digs.
Muhlenberg won the first set against McDaniel but dropped the next three. Tornetta led the attack with 12 kills, and her 33 total for the day moved the "Killer Queen" - according to a sign hanging in the gym - into fourth place on the program's all-time list with 1,149 for her career.
With her 96 assists on the day, Hubert moved into the top 10 on the CC all-time list with 3,569.
