The Muhlenberg men's basketball team elevated its 2018 win streak to four straight games by defeating Gettysburg, 74-67.
The Mules (6-7, 4-3 CC) built up a nine-point lead at halftime and withstood a second-half rally by the Bullets (4-10, 2-5 CC) to move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Centennial Conference standings, along with Johns Hopkins and Dickinson.
For the second straight game, sophomore
Matt Gnias scored over 20 points, pouring in a game-high 22. He finished 6-of-16 from the field and 4-of-10 from long range while also making 6-of-8 free throws.
Seniors
Nick Rindock and
JeanLee Baez also scored in double figures. Rindock
(pictured above) contributed 16 points and made seven of his 10 shots from the floor. Baez added 10 points, and both he and freshman
Michael Morreale led the Mules with five rebounds. Junior
Brendan Hughes, who earlier in the day was named a
Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Scholar-Athlete, finished with six points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Muhlenberg took an early first-half lead, with a series of nifty moves inside from Baez leading to a layup to make it 15-10. Gettysburg scored the next six points to go up by one, but Hughes ended the run with one of his two three-pointers after grabbing an offensive rebound. The Mules carried their new lead through the rest of the half, stretching their advantage to 35-26 after freshman
Spencer Duke earned three points the old fashioned way.
The Mules extended their lead to as many as 11 after a Rindock jumper before Gettysburg started its run, scoring nine unanswered points to go up 48-47. Muhlenberg quickly regained its lead back, with a Gnias three and a Baez layup off a feed from Gnias making it a four-point game.
After a Bullets basket, Rindock scored five straight points to put the Mules up 57-50. Gettysburg was able to climb back to within four with 3:10 remaining, but Gnias took over from there, scoring 11 of Muhlenberg's final 12 points to help seal the win.
The Mules committed a season-low seven turnovers in the contest while forcing 17 Bullets mistakes. The defense has averaged 15.8 forced turnovers and allowed only 28.2 percent shooting from three-point range during Muhlenberg's four-game win streak.
Muhlenberg looks to extend the streak to five victories in its next game Sunday against McDaniel at the Palestra in Philadelphia at 7:30. Tickets for that game are still on sale in advance for $15 and are $20 at the ticket window on gameday. For more information, visit
