The Muhlenberg men's soccer team continued to play tough against strong competition, taking nationally ranked and undefeated Johns Hopkins to a second overtime before falling 1-0.
The Mules (2-5-2, 0-3-1 CC) held the Blue Jays (10-0-0, 4-0-0 CC), ranked fourth by D3soccer.com and 11th in the United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, scoreless through 90 minutes for the first time all season.
Muhlenberg was limited to four first-half scoring chances, with junior
Kevin Irving and senior
Gary Pershad each creating scoring opportunities late in the period. Irving's shot missed its mark wide, and Pershad's attempt was saved by the Blue Jay goalkeeper.
The defense of Muhlenberg goalkeeper
Jordan Schreer and backs
Zach Cimring,
Brian Heckman and
Cameron Miller stood tall against all 11 Hopkins shots through 90 minutes. Neither team generated good chances to score in the first overtime, as the only shot attempt came from the Blue Jays and it was blocked.
Thirty-five seconds into the second overtime, Johns Hopkins scored the golden goal.
Schreer finished the match with four saves, making three stops in the first half and one in the second period.
Four of Muhlenberg's last six opponents have been previously ranked or are currently ranked, and the team faces another ranked opponent in its next match Tuesday vs. Rowan.
