Behind a career-high 24 kills from sophomore
Maggie Enestvedt, the Muhlenberg volleyball team won 3-1 at Susquehanna for its eighth straight victory.
Â
The Mules (14-2) have now reached an eight-game winning streak five times in program history – three times in the early 1990s and then again in 2014, when the Mules won a program-record 13 straight matches. Muhlenberg has played three four-set and five-set matches to go with two sweeps during its current streak.
Â
Susquehanna is one of two teams to have received votes in the AVCA Division III poll at some point this season that Muhlenberg beat in its streak. The other team is fellow Landmark Conference foe Scranton, who suffered its only loss thus far to Muhlenberg.
Â
Enestvedt hit .385 in knocking down her 24 kills, making only four errors on 52 attacks. She also finished with eight digs and two blocks.
Â
Junior
Shannon Hubert, fresh off earning
Centennial Conference player of the week honors, recorded 41 assists and 11 digs in the victory. Sophomore
Tara Register led the Mules with 13 digs while also adding nine kills, and freshman
Maya Illovsky also finished with double-digit digs (10). Junior
Kelly Tornetta contributed in all areas of the court, tying her career best with five service aces to go with nine kills, nine digs and three blocks.
Â
The Mules started the match with a 6-3 advantage in the first set thanks to two Enestvedt kills and aces from Hubert and Tornetta. Muhlenberg upped its lead to 13-6 before Susquehanna rallied back to tie the stanza at 20-20. The River Hawks took the lead on the next point, but a Tornetta kill tied it back up and started a 5-0 Mule rally to close the set at 25-21.
Â
Muhlenberg kept its momentum into the second set, with five of Enestvedt's kills, including three straight, helping her team out to a 7-1 lead. The lead later grew to double digits before Susquehanna made a late push in the set. Register's fifth kill of the match sealed the set victory for Muhlenberg at 25-17.
Â
Susquehanna bolted out to an early advantage in the third stanza. Sophomore
Laura Boll put down her first kill of the match to stem the River Hawks' rally and another Boll attack cut the deficit to four. Susquehanna, however, withstood Muhlenberg's advances to take the third set.
Â
The two teams kept the start of the fourth set a close affair until Muhlenberg made its run down 12-10 starting with blocks from Enestvedt and sophomore
Madison Forrest, one of a team-high four denials for Forrest. An Illovsky ace and three River Hawk errors opened up a 17-12 lead for the Mules, but Susquehanna battled back to within one point on four separate occasions to stay close. Coming out of a timeout, Enestvedt finished off the match with her final two kills to win the set 25-22 for the Mules.
Â
The Mules put their streak to the test against another strong opponent Friday at Ramapo, who made the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and has started 2017 with a 12-3 record.
