Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Conquers Battlefield

The Muhlenberg volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a perfect weekend, winning all four of its matches at Gettysburg's Battlefield Classic.

Sweeps of Penn State Altoona and Hood and four-set victories over St. Mary's (Md.) and Bethany (W.Va.) gave the Mules their first 4-0 start since 1994.

Of the four opponents, two earned postseason bids last year, with Altoona playing in the ECAC Tournament and Bethany earning an NCAA bid.

Junior co-captains Shannon Hubert and Kelly Tornetta were named to the all-tournament team.

Hubert (pictured above) averaged 10.00 assists and 3.93 digs per set to land on an all-tournament team for the third time in her career. The 140 total assists moved Hubert into fifth place on the program's all-time list with 1,741 for her career. She had two huge matches on the second day of the tournament, with 42 assists and 14 digs against St. Mary's and 39 assists, 18 digs, 4 service aces and 4 kills in only 6 attempts vs. Bethany.

Tornetta earned her third career all-tournament honor by averaging a team-leading 3.64 kills per set and hitting .342. She also averaged 2.14 digs. Tornetta recorded double figures in kills in all four matches, with a high of 15 against St. Mary's, to surpass 500 kills for her career. She notched 11 kills without an error in 25 attempts vs. Penn State Altoona and recorded her ninth career double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs in the Bethany match.

Junior Erica Schultz (.341 hitting percentage) and sophomore Maggie Enestvedt (3.07 kills per set, .250 percentage) also had a strong tournament on the attack. Schultz had kills on 8 of her 13 attempts vs. St. Mary's, and Enestvedt hit .500 (9 kills in 18 attempts) in the Penn State Altoona match.

Freshman Maya Illovsky led the defense with 45 digs, including 20 vs. Bethany. Freshman Rebecca Shear also recorded double figures in digs in a match, pulling up 12 vs. Hood in her first career match, and Kendall Applegate just missed, recording 9 vs. Bethany.
