Facing tough opponents, the Muhlenberg volleyball team battled back from down 2-0 in both of its matches and earned five-set victories against Scranton and Stockton.
Â
The Mules (10-2) first launched a comeback against previously unbeaten Scranton, winning the third set 25-22 and the fourth stanza 25-14. Muhlenberg then jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set and eventually went up 14-7 on a
Laura Boll service ace. The Mules then held off one final Scranton rally to take the final set, 15-12.
Â
Muhlenberg again trailed to start its match against Stockton before winning the third and fourth stanzas, 25-22 and 28-26, respectively. The Mules then repeated their formula from the previous match, gaining a 9-7 advantage in the fifth set thanks to three straight aces from sophomore
Tara Register. Stockton battled back to within two before
Kelly Tornetta's team-high 20th kill of the match won it for Muhlenberg.
Â
Tornetta also finished with 12 digs against Stockton for her 13th career double-double. Sophomore
Maggie Enestvedt also finished with a double-double (12 kills, 16 digs) to go with a team-high seven blocks. Sophomore
Stefanie Mutter recorded 15 kills while hitting .433 and also finished with six blocks.
Â
Enestvedt and junior
Erica Schultz each had 11 kills to lead Muhlenberg against Scranton, and freshman
Maya Illovsky dug out a season-high 28 attacks.
Â
Junior
Shannon Hubert became the fourth Mule to top 2,000 assists in a career (2,032), finishing with 33 against Scranton and a career-high 53 vs. Stockton. She also recorded 33 digs on the day.
Â
Entering the day, Muhlenberg's two opponents had a combined record of 20-2 and Scranton was receiving votes in the AVCA Division III poll. The last time the Mules played and won consecutive five-set matches was in 2014 when they defeated F&M and McDaniel. It was also the first time Muhlenberg won consecutive five-set matches in the same day since 2006.
Â
In making its comeback against Scranton, Muhlenberg opened up a 9-2 lead in the third set and held the seven-point advantage through most of the stanza until Scranton battled back to within four. Kills by Schultz and Tornetta ended the set in Muhlenberg's favor. The fourth stanza went similarly, with Muhlenberg opening up a 21-10 lead thanks to an 8-0 run that included three Tornetta aces.
Â
The turning point against Stockton came when a Tornetta kill tied the third set at 17-17. Muhlenberg then won the next five points, and three more Tornetta kills helped the home team force a fourth set.
Â
Muhlenberg trailed to start the fourth stanza, but two straight service aces from junior
Brenna Littleson tied the set at 9-9. The Mules won the next three points and held an advantage until Stockton tied the stanza at 23-23. The two teams then traded points until a kill from Mutter followed by a Schultz kill won the set for Muhlenberg.
