The Muhlenberg men's soccer team came back from a 1-0 deficit by scoring twice in a four-minute span of the second half to defeat a strong Lebanon Valley squad, 2-1, in its 2017 season opener.
The Dutchmen set a school record with 18 wins last year, winning the ECAC championship and cracking the national top 25 for the first time ever.
Lebanon Valley scored off a rebound in the 27th minute, but the Mule defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way.
Muhlenberg drew even with 30:07 remaining in the second half when sophomore
Kevin Hagan received a back-heel pass from junior Shaun Batholomew in the box, then sent the ball across to the left side, where classmate
Zach Cimring, making his first career start, one-touched it into the net for his first career goal. The assist was the first career point for both Hagan
(pictured above) and Bartholomew.
With 26:13 showing in the clock, sophomore
Matthew Athanas-Linden was tripped in the box after receiving a pass from junior
Noah Fulcomer. Junior
Kevin Irving converted the penalty kick for his second career goal.
Lebanon Valley took three shots with a chance to tie in the remaining time, but one sailed high and junior
Jordan Schreer saved the other two. The Mules successfully defended a corner kick in the final minute to preserve the win.
Schreer, making his return to Muhlenberg after a year away, stopped six shots.
