The Muhlenberg baseball team came back to tie twice against one of the top pitchers in the Centennial Conference but wound up on the short end of an 8-4 score against Dickinson.
The Red Devils broke open a scoreless duel between their starter, who came in with a 5-0 record and 0.84 ERA, and Mule freshman
Ryan Kaverick by plating a run in the top of the fifth. Muhlenberg came back in the bottom of the inning on a clutch two-out hit by junior
Troy Vazquez.
After the Mules had runners on second and third with nobody out but failed to bring home with the next two batters, Vazquez jumped on the first pitch he saw and lined a single to center to bring in sophomore
Matt Riebesell with the tying run.Â
Dickinson (14-10, 1-2) went back in front with three in the top of the sixth, and again the Mules (10-10, 1-2) came back in a rally that started with two out an nobody on. After senior
John Icaza singled and stole second, Riebesell brought him in with a single to make it 4-2.
The next batter, senior
Robbie Hopes, topped a ball to the right side of the mound and was called out by the base umpire. But after a conference - and after the Dickinson fielders had returned to the dugout - the umpires ruled that the throw pulled the first baseman off the base, and Hopes was declared safe.
One batter later, junior
Eric Reitmeyer blooped a single to right to score Riebesell and Hopes
(pictured above, celebrating with junior Sam Kasten) with the tying runs. Â
The Red Devils scored three in the top of the seventh to go ahead for good.
Riebesell and Vazquez had two hits each for Muhlenberg.
