Softball Closes Out Season

The Muhlenberg softball team staged comebacks in both games against one of the top pitching staffs in Division III but was swept at Gettysburg in its final games of the 2017 season.

The Mules, who needed a sweep to qualify for the Centennial Conference playoffs, trailed 8-0 after three innings in the opener against the CC leader with a 1.22 ERA. They scored four runs on four hits in the top of the fourth, however, with senior Sarah Merlo knocking in a run on a single and junior Karissa Astrella hitting a two-run single.

Gettysburg got the four runs back in the bottom of the inning and went on to the 12-4 win.

In the nightcap, Muhlenberg overcame an early 1-0 hole with three runs in the top of the third. Merlo started the rally with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Junior Kristina Qualben brought in two more runs with a two-out double.

The Bullets scored their runs in their half of the inning to retake the lead and added three more runs for a 7-3 win.

The seven runs were the most allowed in a CC doubleheader this season by Gettysburg, which came in ranked 20th in Division III with a team ERA of 1.68.

Courtney Simon, the other Mule senior to close out her career, had a pair of hits in the nightcap to finish with a season batting average of .302.

Junior Haley Fedak struck out three in the opener and ended the season with the second-best strikeout ratio in program history at 6.69 per seven innings. Freshman Nicole Bergamo pitched in both games to wind up with a school-record 18 relief appearances on the season.
