Fedak Shuts Down Scranton in Softball Split

Junior Haley Fedak tossed her first complete game shutout of her career to help the Muhlenberg softball team earn a non-conference split with Scranton.

Fedak gave up three hits to the first eight batters she faced and then did not allow another hit in her final five innings of work. She also struck out five Royals, who came into the game batting .347 as a team, in the 3-0 victory for the Mules (13-23). Scranton then took the nightcap, 4-2, in Muhlenberg's final home game of the regular season.

The main threat to Fedak's shutout bid came in the first inning, as the Royals (19-14) loaded the bases with two hits and a walk. Fedak pitched her way out of the jam, however, forcing a fly ball to center to retire the side.

Senior Courtney Simon grounded a single up the middle for Muhlenberg's first hit in the bottom of the second. Simon's single was one of three straight hits for the Mules to load the bases for Fedak, who lofted a fly ball to right deep enough to score Simon and give her team a 1-0 lead.

Simon started the next Muhlenberg rally in the fourth as well, reaching on an error. Junior Amelia Shelley and sophomore Kristy Selby each singled to left center, with Selby's base knock driving home Simon. Fedak later plated Shelley on an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 Mules.

Scranton was able to put runners on first and second in the sixth and seventh innings but Fedak worked her way through both jams to finish the game with the victory.

The Royals scored the first four runs of the later game and only allowed one hit, an infield single by junior Karissa Astrella, through the first five innings. Muhlenberg's offense got going in the sixth inning, with Fedak lacing a hard-hit single to start the inning and Astrella following suit with a base knock to right center. A ground out moved both runners up before junior Hanna Caiola hit a grounder deep enough to shortstop to bring home the Mules' first run.

Sophomore Kristina Qualben continued the rally with a single into left and Simon bounced a ball up the middle that scored Astrella to cut the Royals' lead down to 4-2. The rally, however, ended on the next batter. The Mules did get their leadoff hitter to second in the seventh before Scranton shut the door on the comeback bid.

Shelley finished the doubleheader with three hits to lead the Mules offensively. Selby finished 2-for-2 in game and Simon had a hit in each game as well. Muhlenberg did not strike out in either game.

Muhlenberg plays two pivotal games at Gettysburg Saturday to wrap up the regular season. A Mules sweep and two losses by Franklin & Marshall against Washington College will put the Mules in the Centennial Conference playoffs thanks to a tiebreaker advantage over Franklin & Marshall.
