The Muhlenberg softball team rallied in its final at-bat but came up just short in dropping the second game of a twinight doubleheader at Arcadia, 5-4. The Knights took the opener, 8-0.
The Mules trailed by two runs and had two outs and nobody on in the top of the seventh before sophomore
Kristina Qualben reached on an infield single. Muhlenberg was down to its final strike when senior
Courtney Simon tripled on a 1-2 pitch to score Qualben. Simon was stranded at third, however.
Muhlenberg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when junior
Hayley Peterson (pictured above) singled through the left side for her first career hit, scoring junior
Amelia Shelley from second.
Arcadia went on top with four runs in the bottom of the third, and the Mules closed to within one in the fifth with two two-out runs. Simon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run; it was the 10th time she was hit during her career, one short of the school record. Shelley followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The Knights scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Shelley and junior
Hanna Caiola had two hits apiece in the second game.
Sophomore
Allyson Sweeney and freshman
Sarah Siclari had the only two Muhlenberg hits in the opener.
