Pitching Rules Day as Baseball Splits

The Muhlenberg baseball team split a pair of well-pitched games at Washington College, winning the opener 2-1 with a ninth-inning rally before falling in the nightcap, 3-1.

Three Mule hurlers combined to allow four runs on only 10 hits in the two games. Sophomore RJ Hennessey (pictured above) pitched a career-long seven innings in the opener, giving up five hits and striking out four. He retired the first seven batters he faced and pitched 3 2/3 one-hit innings after the Shoremen (14-20, 5-9) scored their lone run.

Junior Sam Kasten retired all six batters he faced, striking out three, to earn his first win of the season.

Junior Timmy Pilrun tossed his first complete game of the season in the nightcap, striking out eight and allowing just one run over his final seven innings of work.

Muhlenberg (14-17, 4-9) trailed 1-0 in the first game when senior John Icaza led off the top of the ninth by drawing a walk on five pitches. Freshman John Serruto follow with a sacrifice bunt and reached base safely when the throw from the pitcher was wild.

Senior Robbie Hopes followed with a double to deep center, bringing home both runners and giving the Mules the lead.

Kasten sealed the win with a ground ball and two strikeouts.

In the second game, Washington hit a two-run homer in the first and added a third run in the fifth. Junior Eric Reitmeyer led off the eighth with a single and went to second on a pinch-single by freshman Jack Avallone. One out later, Icaza singled in Muhlenberg's first run of the game.

The Mules got the tying run to the plate in the ninth after freshman Billy Brittingham hit a double, but the final two batters were retired.
