The Muhlenberg softball team collected double-digit hits in both games of its doubleheader sweep of Elizabethtown on the road.
The Mules (12-18) totaled 23 hits for the doubleheader, 10 in the first and 13 in the second game, on the way to 4-1 and 7-4 victories. Sophomore
Kristina Qualben finished with five hits and three RBIs to pace the Muhlenberg offense, following a 2-for-4 game with a 3-for-4 performance in the nightcap.
Freshman
Sarah Schubert smashed the biggest hit of the day though, smacking a grand slam over the right field fence for her first career home run. Her big hit gave the Mules a 4-0 advantage in the second inning of the late game.
The Blue Jays (5-25) responded with three runs in the third. Muhlenberg answered back in the fifth with two more tallies, as Qualben singled home sophomore
Allyson Sweeney and senior
Courtney Simon roped a RBI double to right center, plating Qualben.
Elizabethtown loaded the bases in the sixth and managed one run before junior
Hayley Peterson came in relief and stopped the rally before any more damage could be done. Qualben then tacked an insurance run with another RBI single, and Peterson finished the Blue Jays off to preserve the win, picking up her first save of the season.
Freshman
Nicole Bergamo (pictured above) started in game two and earned her first career victory, pitching five innings while striking out two.
Peterson and junior
Haley Fedak combined to hold Elizabethtown to six hits and one walk in the first game. Fedak tossed the first three innings, allowing only one hit and one walk to go with two strikeouts. Peterson came in for the final four innings and earned the victory.
Muhlenberg broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of the early game when junior
Amelia Shelley singled up the middle, allowing junior
Karissa Astrella to score. Sophomore
Kristy Selby followed with a base hit through the right side and Qualben scored to make it 2-0 Mules.
Selby drove home her second run of the game in the sixth and Qualben collected her first RBI of the day in the seventh. The Blue Jays scored their run in the sixth and Peterson set them down in order in the seventh to close out the win for the Mules.
Shelley had two hits in each game of the doubleheader. Sweeney and junior
Hanna Caiola each had two hits including a double and a RBI in the late game. Astrella went a perfect 3-for-3 in the early game.
