The Muhlenberg baseball team hit three home runs and came back to tie in the late innings, but Haverford walked off with a 6-5 win.
Seniors
John Icaza and
Robbie Hopes hit the round-trippers for the Mules. IcazaÂ
(pictured above) led off the game with a homer and belted another one in the eighth inning with Muhlenberg trailing 5-3. It was the second multiple-homer game of the season for Icaza and the third in his career. He moved into a tie for sixth place on the program's all-time list with 12 career home runs.
Two batters after Icaza's second home run, Hopes went opposite field for his fourth home run of the season, tying the game at 5-5.
The Mules had a shot to take the lead in that inning but had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on a double.
Freshman
Ryan Kaverick breezed through his first 3 2/3 innings of relief, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, but a two-out walk in the ninth was followed by two singles, sending Muhlenberg (13-16, 3-8) to its second walkoff loss in the last three games.
The Mules scored single runs in each of the first three innings, with sophomore
Jon Capra and senior
Thomas Yohe hitting sacrifice flies in the second and third, respectively. Haverford (14-12-1, 5-5-1), the defending Centennial Conference champion, took the lead with three in the bottom of the fifth.
In addition to Icaza, Hopes and Yohe, sophomore
Matt Riebesell and freshmen
John Serruto and
Brenden Weiss each had two hits for the Mules. Weiss also stole a pair of bases.
