The Muhlenberg softball team put forth an inspired late-inning rally that ended short of tying the second game of its doubleheader against McDaniel.
With two outs in the seventh inning trailing 7-1, the Mules sent pinch hitter
Sara Reibschied to the plate and Reischied drew a walk on a full count. Freshman
Sarah Schubert was then hit by a pitch before junior
Karissa Astrella singled up the middle, bringing home Reibschied.
Sophomore
Allyson Sweeney followed suit with a hard hit single that scooted under the third baseman's glove into left field and Schubert raced home to make it 7-3. Junior
Hanna Caiola drew another walk to load the bases and bring the potential tying run to the plate.
The Green Terror, however, brought in the conference leader in saves to strike out the next batter and complete the doubleheader sweep, as it won the first game 4-0 as well.
Junior
Amelia Shelley (pictured above) led the Mules (9-17, 5-5 CC) at the plate, going 3-for-3 in the first game and singling to center to bring home the first Mule run of the second game. Senior
Courtney Simon had two hits in the late game, her fourth multi-hit game in CC competition. Sweeney and Astrella each had a hit in both games, with Astrella smacking her team-best eighth double of the season in the early game.
Junior
Haley Fedak lasted four innings to start the first game, striking out three batters while only giving up two hits and one run but walked five. Freshmen
Nicole Bergamo and
Sarah Siclari each got the final four outs of a game on the mound and recorded a strikeout, with Bergamo finishing off game one and Siclari ending the later game.
The Green Terror (16-11-1, 8-1-1) came into the game in first place in the CC standings, having made the CC playoffs each of the last five seasons. The sweep knocks the Mules out of fourth place, one game back of Franklin & Marshall (6-4).
