Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Takes Down No. 1 Bullets

In a thrilling game from start to finish, the Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team handed number one ranked Gettysburg its second straight loss, winning 8-7.

The victory marks the first time ever the Mules (7-1, 2-0 CC) defeated the Bullets (8-2, 1-1 CC) in a series that began in 1988. It is also the first time women's lacrosse defeated the top-ranked team in Division III in program history. The victory also extended the team's winning streak to seven games, tying the school record set last season.

Muhlenberg fell behind to start the game but rallied back with three straight goals and entered halftime with a 4-3 lead. Gettysburg tied it to start the second half and later scored to go up 6-5 with 15:09 to go.

The Mules answered the Bullets again with three straight goals, starting with junior Jordy Bonvini slashing through the heart of the defense and finding the back of the net to even the score. A minute and a half later, sophomore Emma Carmody drew a Gettysburg foul and scored off a free-position shot to give her team a 7-6 lead with 11:57 left.

Senior Stephanie D'Ascoli netted the game-winning goal three minutes later off a nice inside feed from senior Nora Fisher. The Bullets cut the lead to one with 5:18 left, but the Mule defense held strong from there, denying Gettysburg any shot opportunities over the final five minutes and forcing three critical turnovers to seal the victory.

Bonvini scored four goals to lead Muhlenberg offensively, netting her sixth hat trick of the season. Fisher and D'Ascoli each finished with two points, with D'Ascoli also assisting Muhlenberg's first goal of the game scored by senior Kelsey Nagle. Fisher also assisted on a first-half goal by freshman Emma Charron that tied the game at 3-3.

Senior goalkeeper Sara Allison saved eight shots in earning the victory. Sophomore Morgan Weiss collected a career-high four ground balls and sophomore Amanda Tullo led the defense with two caused turnovers.

Muhlenberg's defense held Gettysburg, who has made the Centennial Conference title game each year since 2001, to a .577 shot-on-goal percentage, well below its season average of .807. Entering the game, Gettysburg had lost only twice to a non-F&M CC team in the regular season since 2002, with both those losses occurring in overtime.
