The Muhlenberg softball team suffered one-run heartbreaking losses to Husson and Sage on day two in Florida.
After getting ahead and then falling behind early against Sage, the Mules (1-3) came back to retake the lead before the Gators (1-1) tied the game at 7-7 heading into the seventh inning. Junior
Paige Seitz then hit a go-ahead solo home run, her first of her career, to provide the Mules with the lead again. Sage, who reached the North Atlantic Conference championship game last season, rallied back and won the game 9-8 on a two-run walkoff home run.
The Mules were held to three hits and succumbed to a late-inning 2-1 defeat to Husson in game one despite a strong performance on the mound from junior
Haley Fedak. She pitched five shutout innings to start the game, only allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six Eagles (2-2).
Seitz's home run was one of two hits for her in the game and she scored three runs to go with her RBI. Sophomore
Allyson Sweeney led the Mules with a combined 3-for-6 day at the plate to go with an RBI.
Muhlenberg started out against Sage scoring the first two runs in the second inning. Freshman
Sarah Siclari singled and Seitz walked before junior
Amelia Shelley roped a single through the left side that brought home Siclari. Seitz later raced home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Mules.
Sage responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. The Mules countered in the fourth, as Seitz singled and sophomore
Sara Reibschied smacked a pinch-hit double to left center for her first career hit. Both runners scored on a passed ball, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
Muhlenberg completed the comeback in the sixth with two outs. Shelley reached on an error and freshman
Sarah Schubert followed with a single to center. Senior
Sarah Merlo then slapped an RBI single to left, plating Shelley. Schubert scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Sweeney followed with her second hit of the game to bring home Merlo and put the Mules back in front 7-6.
Freshman
Nicole Bergamo made her Muhlenberg debut in relief of starter
Hayley Peterson. Bergamo tossed 4
1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. Peterson also recorded four strikeouts in 1
2/3 innings.
Against Husson, the Mules capitalized on their best scoring opportunity in the second inning. Sophomore
Kristina Qualben singled up the middle to lead off the frame and Sweeney slapped a base hit to left two batters later. The left fielder could not field the ball cleanly, allowing Qualben to come all the way around and score.
Fedak
(pictured above) twice pitched out of early jams to keep Husson scoreless. With two runners on and one out in the second inning, Fedak recorded two straight punch-outs to retire the side. The Eagles threatened in the fourth as well, starting with a leadoff double and advancing the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Fedak then forced a popout followed by a strikeout.
Muhlenberg could not stop the Eagles a third time however. With two runners on and two outs in the seventh, a double brought home the tying and go-ahead runners to give Husson the lead. The Mules went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.
Siclari struck out five in two-plus innings of relief.
Freshman
Sydney Carey also made her collegiate debut, entering as a pinch runner for Sweeney in the third inning against Sage.
