Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops Two Despite Early Leads

Despite taking the early lead in both games, the Muhlenberg baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Guilford, falling 11-1 and 5-4 in the finale of a three-game weekend series.

In the opener, sophomore Matt Riebesell singled in senior John Icaza, who reached on catcher's interference and stole second, in the top of the first. That would be all the offense for the Mules, however, as the Quakers (13-6) scored in every inning.

The nightcap was much closer. Sophomore Chris Grillo singled to lead off the game and eventually came around on Riebesell's groundout. Guilford scored three runs in the bottom of the first, but Muhlenberg (4-7) came right back to tie the game on a two-out, two-run single by junior Eric Reitmeyer in the second.

The Mules came back again to tie after the Quakers scored a run in the bottom of the second. Riebesell led off the third with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Stephen Koester to make it 4-4. Guilford went ahead yet again with a run in the bottom of the third.

That would be all the scoring. Muhlenberg put a runner in scoring position in the fourth, when sophomore Michael Struck led off with a double, and the seventh, when Riebesell singled and advanced to second on an error, but could not plate the tying run.

Riebesell (pictured above) drove in 10 runs on the Mules' Spring Break trip to the Carolinas and returns home with a .400 batting average.
