Six players scored in double figures for Muhlenberg men's basketball in a balanced offensive effort that led to an 88-79 victory over Haverford.
The Mules (2-6, 1-3 CC) shot a season-best 50.9 percent (29-57) from the floor, including 41.7 percent (10-24) from beyond the arc, in picking up their first Centennial Conference victory of the season. Muhlenberg also made 71.4 percent of their free throws (20-28) to add to the offensive efficiency.
Junior
Erik Werheim and senior
Nick Rindock each scored 15 points to lead the Mules. Werheim
(pictured above) made all six of his shot attempts, including two thunderous dunks in the first half, along with all three free throws. Rindock also totaled seven assists.
Sophomore
Matt Gnias led the team with nine assists to go with 14 points. Senior
JeanLee Baez and freshman
Michael Morreale each chipped in 12 points, with Baez also pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Owen McLeod added 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench to round out the players in double figures.
Muhlenberg jumped in front early in the first half, with a Werheim layup off a feed from Morreale providing a 15-7 lead. The Mules stretched the lead to 10 on a free throw by sophomore
Ryan Gaynor, but the Fords (3-5, 1-3 CC) climbed back to within four with a minute left in the half. Werheim's second dunk of the half off the dish from Gnias put the Mules up 45-39, but Haverford made a jumper to cut the lead back to four at halftime.
The Fords scored the first six points of the second half to take their first lead, but Werheim answered with two free throws to tie the game and a Morreale fast-break dunk gave Muhlenberg the advantage back. Haverford kept the game within two until back-to-back three-pointers from McLeod and Gnias started a 12-0 run that gave the Mules a 67-55 lead.
Haverford battled back to within four with seven minutes remaining, but a Morreale three-pointer followed by three points from Werheim the old-fashioned way helped put the contest out of reach.
The Mules have now won six straight meetings against Haverford and seven straight in Memorial Hall. Muhlenberg has won 22 of 26 CC contests against the Fords since league play began in 1994.
