Despite big games from senior
Nick Rindock, sophomore
Ryan Gaynor and freshman
Michael Morreale, the Muhlenberg men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker at home to King's, 74-72.
The Monarchs (3-3) scored the winning basket with 2 seconds left in a back-and-forth game in which neither team led by more than seven points. The Mules could get off only a desperation three-point shot at the buzzer.
Rindock flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Gaynor scored a career-high 12 points, reaching double figures for the third time in five games this season, and Morreale
(pictured above) notched career highs in points (13) and rebounds (7).
Muhlenberg (1-4) trailed 70-65 with under two minutes left when sophomore
Matt Gnias was fouled on a drive to the basket. He made both free throws to cut the gap to three.
After Rindock deflected a pass at the other end and the Mules picked up the loose ball, Gnias hit a runner in the lane to make it 70-69 with 1:03 left.
King's scored on its next possession, but the Mules answered when Gnias found junior
Brendan Hughes open in the corner for a game-tying three with less than 30 ticks on the clock.
Hughes finished with nine points, while senior
JeanLee Baez netted eight on 4-for-4 shooting, raising his season field-goal percentage to .774.
Morreale helped Muhlenberg to a seven-point halftime lead with 10 points in the first 20 minutes, two on a follow-up dunk.
