The Muhlenberg baseball team came from behind twice in the late innings for a 13-11 win against Ursinus in a game that featured five lead changes, 24 runs and 30 hits.
With the win, the Mules (11-11, 2-0) started 2-0 in the Centennial Conference for the first time since 2009 and swept the home-and-home series from the Bears (15-10, 1-3) for the first time in the 23-year-history of the league.
Ursinus put up four runs in the top of the sixth to open up an 8-3 lead before the Mules regained the lead with six of their own in the bottom of the inning. Freshmen
Matt Riebesell and
Jon Capra began the rally with back-to-back doubles. After two outs, the Mules drew back-to-back hit by pitches, including one by freshman
Matt Glubiak, and another by junior
John Icaza with the bases loaded. After the Bears made a pitching change, Muhlenberg tallied three consecutive RBI singles by senior
Andrew Rava, junior
Robbie Hopes and Riebesell to take a 9-8 lead. Â
In the top of the seventh, Ursinus took the lead right back with three runs, two on a homer. The Mules provided some fireworks in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead for good.
Sophomore
Eric Reitmeyer drilled an RBI double to deep left-center field to bring in the first run. Three batters later, Icaza ripped an RBI single to left field to tie the game, 11-11. Rava followed though with an infield single to load the bases before the Mules reclaimed the lead for good. Hopes knocked in the go-ahead run on an infield single, and Riebesell brought in an insurance run with a ground ball.
Junior
Christopher Bunero made his way onto the mound with one out in the eighth and left two Ursinus runners in scoring position. He then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Freshman
Chris Grillo (pictured above) went 4-for-6 for the second straight game, matching his career high in hits, and runs (four) to go along with a triple. Icaza, Rava, Hopes, Riebesell and Reitmeyer combined to go 10-22 with three doubles, nine RBI, six runs scored, two walks and a stolen base.
