Taylor Trifiolis went 3-for-3 in the opening game as the Muhlenberg softball team split a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Washington College, winning the first game 2-1, before falling in a spirited comeback in the nightcap, 6-4.
Trifiolis began the opener with a double to left field in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, she drilled an RBI double off the left field wall that gave the Mules (9-15, 3-3) a 1-0 lead.
The very next inning, sophomore
Paige Seitz came around from second base to score on an infield hit by senior
Nicole Iannarone, making it 2-0.
The Shorewomen (14-14, 6-2), who entered the day in first place in the CC, got in the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single, but that was the only run they could salvage against sophomore
Hayley Peterson (pictured above). The right-hander allowed only five hits and an unearned run in the complete-game effort, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Trifiolis, who wrapped up the opener with a base hit up the middle in the sixth, moved into a tie for sixth place on the program's all-time list with 28 career doubles.
Washington opened up Game 2 with two runs in the third before tacking on another run in the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to take a seemingly commanding 6-0 lead. But the Mules did not back down, getting the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning.
After two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs, freshman
Allyson Sweeney put the Mules on the board with a two-run single. The ensuing batter was Iannarone and she crushed a two-run double off the right field wall to put Muhlenberg within two runs. The game would end on a strikeout, however.
