Video Recap
The Muhlenberg baseball team came from behind to tie in the eighth and ninth innings against one of the best pitchers in the Centennial Conference, then scored four runs in the 10th for a 6-2 win at Haverford.
The Fords (17-8, 6-1) are receiving votes in both Division III polls and came into the game as the lone remaining undefeated team in the CC. The win was the Mules' second in four days against a team receiving national attention; the last time they played, they split a doubleheader with 22nd-ranked McDaniel.
Sophomore
Timmy Pilrun and junior
Christopher Bunero combined on a four-hitter. Pilrun was magnificent after allowing a run on a hit and three walks in the first - over his final six innings, he allowed just two hits and only one runner past first base. He finished with eight strikeouts, including two with the bases loaded to end the first, in his seven-inning stint. Bunero retired nine of the 11 batters he faced, allowing one unearned run and striking out four, to earn the win.
Haverford's first-inning run stood up as the lone score through the first seven innings, mostly due to a pitcher who was 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA at the start of the game. With one out in the top of the eighth, though, freshman
Chris Grillo drew a walk, and consecutive two-out singles by junior
John Icaza and senior
Andrew Rava brought him around with the Mules' first run.
The Fords went back ahead in the bottom of the eighth, but Muhlenberg (13-12, 4-1) wasn't done with clutch two-out hitting. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Grillo singled up the middle to drive home freshman
Jon Capra, who had walked, with the tying run.
After Bunero struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth, Icaza led off the 10th with a single. A bunt and a stolen base moved him to third with two outs, and after a walk to freshman
Matt Riebesell, Capra doubled down the left-field line to give the Mules thier first lead.
Freshman
Stephen Koester followed with another double to bring in two more runs, and sophomore
Eric Reitmeyer singled in the final run of the inning.
Bunero set down the Fords 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.
Capra
(pictured above) went 3-for-4, while Grillo, Icaza and Rava had two hits apiece.
