Game Recap: Baseball |

Pilrun Pitches Baseball to Win

The Muhlenberg baseball team split its doubleheader with Penn State Berks, taking the first game 5-1, and falling in the nightcap, 18-6.

Sophomore Timmy Pilrun (pictured above) pitched a superb game in the opener, going the distance for the second time this season. He struck out seven batters and scattered seven hits against a Penn State Berks squad that came in with a lofty .353 team batting average and averaging 11.9 runs per game.

The Mules (9-8) got an early run from junior John Icaza, who punched a one-out RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the first. The Nittany Lions (9-2) tied the game in the top of the third before Muhlenberg scored two runs in each of the next two innings.

Following a walk and a pair of errors, the Mules retook the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior Thomas Yohe. Freshman Chris Grillo brought in a run on a forceout two batters later to make it a 3-1 game.

With two outs in the fifth, freshman Jon Capra stroked a two-run double to right-center field to add some insurance runs for the Mules.

Muhlenberg received base hits from eight of its nine starters.

The Nittany Lions broke open Game 2 early by scoring nine runs in the top of the third. All six of the Mules' runs came home in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Bobby Merle began the rally with his first career hit, a triple, and freshman Michael Struck, who picked up his first career hit an inning earlier, drove in a run with his second hit.
