Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweeps Second Straight DH

Four long balls and two solid pitching performances gave the Muhlenberg softball team its second doubleheader sweep in three days, 8-2 and 9-2 at DeSales.

Sophomore Hanna Caiola hit her first career home run in the opener and freshman Kristina Qualben went deep in the second game. But the real long ball star was senior Taylor Trifiolis, who belted two home runs in the nightcap. It was the eighth time in program history that a player hit two home runs in a game.

Trifiolis (pictured above), who hit a dramatic two-out game-tying home run in the seventh inning against King's on Tuesday, is hitting .452 this season and has matched her career total of three four-baggers entering the season.

Sophomore Hayley Peterson tossed a complete-game six-hitter in the opener, retiring 16 of 18 batters in one stretch. She struck out only one but let her infielders help her out, getting 16 of the 21 outs on ground balls. The batters also helped her out, belting out a season-high 16 hits.

Qualben's RBI double in the top of the second tied the score at 1-1, and a second run scored on an error. Caiola led off the third with her home run, igniting a five-run inning that Trifiolis capped with a two-run single.

Sophomore Amelia Shelley drove in the Mules' final run with a double in the seventh.

Every Muhlenberg batter in the lineup had at least one hit, with Trifiolis and Shelley recording three each and Qualben, Caiola and sophomore Paige Seitz contributing two apiece.

In the second game, sophomore Haley Fedak scattered three hits over seven innings to pick up her third win of the season. She finished strong, retiring 11 of the final 12 hitters.

After Caiola's RBI single gave the Mules (6-8) a 1-0 lead in the first, they used a combination of small ball and long ball to plate four runs in the second. Muhlenberg stole four bases in the inning, with Seitz scoring on the back end of a double steal. Senior Amie DeFeo brought in a second run with a sacrifice fly, and Trifiolis brought in two more with her first home run.

Trifiolis went to the opposite field for her second home run in the top of the fourth. Qualben's second home run of the season, to center field, made it 8-1 in the fifth. Sophomore Karissa Astrella doubled to lead off the seventh and scored the final run on Qualben's third hit of the game.
