The Muhlenberg baseball team received solid outings from both starting pitchers but ran into difficulty in the late innings and was swept in a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney, 3-1 and 8-3.
Junior
Troy Elias and sophomore
Sam Kasten combined to allow only three runs on nine hits in 10 2/3 innings in the two games.
Elias faced only two batters over the minimum in the first four innings of his start and left after giving up a two-out double in the sixth. That runner wound up scoring on a bases-loaded walk, and another run came in later in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Mules (7-6) scored their lone run in the fifth on an RBI triple by freshman
Chris Grillo.
Kasten went five complete innings in the nightcap, striking out four and allowing only four hits. The Tigers (13-6) erupted for seven runs off three relievers in the bottom of the sixth to take control of the game.
Freshman
Matt Riebesell gave Muhlenberg a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single. Senior
Andrew Rava drove in runs with a groundout in the third and a single in the fifth.
Junior
John Icaza went 3-for-4 in the second game, and Riebesell and Rava had a pair of hits apiece. Riebesell
(pictured above) also had a good day behind the plate, throwing out two runners attempting to steal second in the opener and hopping out to field a bunt and start a 2-6-3 double play in the second game.
