Softball Wins on Extra-Inning Walkoff

An extra-inning walkoff win highlighted the last two days of the Muhlenberg softball team's Spring Break trip to Florida.

The Mules scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, with the winning run scoring on a two-out bases-loaded single by senior Taylor Trifiolis, to defeat Millsaps, 3-2. In their other games, the Mules were defeated by Alfred, Meredith and Arcadia.

Sophomore Hayley Peterson went the distance against Millsaps to earn her first win of the season. She struck out one and pitched out of trouble the entire game, stranding runners in scoring position in each of the first seven innings.

Muhlenberg (2-8) tied the game at 1-1 on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Paige Seitz in the third. The score remained 1-1 through seven, sending the game into extra innings and the international tiebreaker.

The Majors took a 2-1 lead in their half of the eighth. The Mules were down to their last strike three times in their half before coming back.

Muhlenberg's runner was still on second base with two out when sophomore Karissa Astrella singled on an 0-2 pitch. Senior Nicole Iannarone then walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases.

Senior Amie DeFeo also walked on a 3-2 pitch, bringing in freshman Allyson Sweeney with the tying run. Trifiolis jumped on the second pitch and singled to right to plate Astrella with the winning run.

Trifiolis (pictured above) went 4-for-4 and reached base in all five of her plate appearances. Seitz was 2-for-4.

Sophomore Haley Fedak pitched a complete-game seven-hitter in a 3-0 loss to Alfred, which is ranked 11th in Division III. Trifiolis and sophomore Hanna Caiola each went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 14-4 loss to Meredith.

Muhlenberg came back four times in its final game of the trip before falling to Arcadia, 6-4. The Knights scored single runs in the top of the first, second, fourth and fifth, and each time the Mules matched the run in the bottom of the frame. Arcadia finally pulled ahead for good with two in the top of the sixth.

DeFeo had a pair of RBI singles in the loss, and freshman Kristina Qualben hit an RBI double.

Trifiolis led the Mules with a .370 batting average on the trip, and DeFeo drove in a team-high eight runs.
