Junior
Chelsea Gary recorded a double-double, and junior
Brandi Vallely and sophomore
Sara Dilly came close, as the Muhlenberg women's basketball team defeated Swarthmore, 74-64, for its fourth straight win.
The result made the Mules the all-time winningest program in Centennial Conference history. They began the year tied with Johns Hopkins with 296 wins in the first 23 seasons of the league's existence, and their 2-0 CC start gives them 298 - one more than Johns Hopkins, which lost to Gettysburg.
Muhlenberg trailed Hopkins by 21 wins through the 2004-05 season but has recorded an outstanding CC record of 167-41 (.803) over the last 12 years.
The Mules (4-1 overall) had to come from behind to grab the CC wins lead, but not to defeat Swarthmore. They led 21-8 late in the first quarter and held a 23-point advantage early in the fourth before the Garnet (1-4, 1-1) closed the gap at the end.
Gary finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Vallely, playing a full game for the first time this season, ended with 16 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Dilly scored a career-high 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Mules, who entered the game leading Division III in turnover margin, forced 31 turnovers, including 12 in the first quarter. Muhlenberg led 8-5 three minutes into the game before holding Swarthmore to two field goals the rest of the quarter, going on a 13-3 run to build a double-digit lead. The points came quickly: Gary's putback followed by Dilly's steal and assist to Vallely for a layup gave the Mules four points in 29 seconds. Later on, freshman
Emily O'Mahoney assisted Gary for a layup, then drained a three after a steal by junior
Christina Manning for five points in 19 seconds.
The Garnet closed to within single digits twice (nine points in the second quarter and eight in the third), but Muhlenberg remained comfortably ahead. O'Mahoney's second three-pointer of the game and three straight baskets by Dilly - all assisted by Vallely - made up a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter.
Dilly's steal and layup 14 seconds into the fourth gave the Mules their largest lead.
Manning finished with seven points, five rebounds and four assists, while O'Mahoney added four steals to her six points.
