Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Reclaims Scotty Wood Title

Senior Jon Schreer led four players in double figures with 19 points en route to earning MVP honors as the Muhlenberg men's basketball team defeated Wilkes, 80-70, in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament.

Senior Brandon LaRose (14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and no turnovers) also was named to the all-tournament team for the Mules, who won their first title since 2013. Combined with a win by the women's team earlier in the evening, it gave Muhlenberg a sweep of the Scotty Wood Tournament for the fourth time in the last seven years.

Junior Nick Rindock and sophomore Erik Werheim scored 11 points apiece.

Werheim notched 10 points and seven rebounds in a first half in which the Mules (3-0) played from behind for the majority of the time. Down by as many as nine points, Muhlenberg tied the score at 36 when junior Kevin Miller hit a three-pointer off a pass out of the post from junior JeanLee Baez. After a steal by Schreer, Rindock hit a baseline jumper with 23 seconds left in the half to give the Mules their first lead, at 38-36.

The Colonels (2-1) regained the lead on a three-pointer early in the second half, but Muhlenberg turned up its defense, not allowing a field goal for the next six minutes. A three by Schreer put the Mules up by nine at the 12-minute mark, and after Wilkes cut the gap to four, the defense again made sure the lead would hold. Muhlenberg gave up just one field goal in another six-minute stretch, extending its lead to 15 with 4:30 to play.

A dunk by senior John Hunter off a pass from LaRose helped put the finishing touches on the win.

Miller added five steals to his eight points, heading a defense that forced 12 second-half turnovers. Baez finished with nine points and five rebounds. Rindock scored his 11 points in only 13 minutes and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
