The Muhlenberg women's soccer team scored early and preserved a shutout on defense to earn a 1-0 victory against Ursinus on Senior Night.
Freshman midfielder
Alyssa Rose provided the offense for the Mules (6-7-3, 2-4-3 CC) with a goal in the seventh minute, heading into the net a pass from junior midfielder
Carly DeNigris for her third goal of the season. The assist was DeNigris's team-high fourth of the year.
The team honored its seven seniors before the match with a pregame ceremony. Seniors
Courtney Simon,
Rachel Manci,
Abby Lazofsky and
Claire Douglass all saw significant action in the final match of their careers, while injured senior
Kaitlin Cassidy started the second half in a ceremonious moment before being subbed out. The team also recognized injured senior goalkeeper
Tori Gonzalez and team manager
Stephanie Gallucci.
The Bears (6-9-1, 3-6 CC) outshot the Mules in the match 11-6 and took all five shots of the second half. Muhlenberg's backline of Simon and freshmen
Karolyn Kawa,
Madison Ingling and
Casarah Morales played tremendous defense to keep Ursinus off the scoreboard despite the Bears' push to score in the second period.
Freshman goalkeeper
Libby Juliano stopped three shots while earning her third shutout of the season.
The match concluded the 2016 season for Muhlenberg, one that witnessed five freshmen and 10 different players score a goal during the campaign.
