Baseball Closes with Win

Box Score | Video Recap (TV2)

The Muhlenberg baseball team pounded out 15 hits and closed out its season with a 12-3 win at DeSales.

Senior Matthew Lawsky (pictured above) pitched the first seven innings, allowing only two runs and striking out five, to earn his 11th career win. Fellow seniors Christian Ferlan and Phillip Balseca closed out the win against a DeSales team that finished in first place in the Freedom Conference in the regular season and came in with a 10-game winning streak.

Successful senior finales was a theme for the day. The Mules (14-19) started seniors at nine of the 10 positions and all contributed to the win:

• Kurt Johnson reached base in all five appearances, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two walks.
• Michael Giordano also drove in three runs, including the first two of the game on a second-inning single.
• Jimmy Cody went 2-for-5 with a double and drove in two runs, moving into third place on the Mules' all-time list with 177 career hits. He finished his career with 59 extra-base hits, one short of the school record.
• Chris Manfredonia and Danny Usewick each had a hit and scored a pair of runs. Manfredonia plated the first run of the game after hitting a double in the second.
• Nick Plinio was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

And the end was a beginning for one of the Muhlenberg seniors. Marcus Henderson (pictured below), a four-year team member who did not appear in a varsity game until this season, made his first career start and batted leadoff. He recorded both his first career stolen base and his first career hit.
