The Mules (14-9, 4-4) got off to a good start, holding off the Garnet (18-4, 7-1) twice to capture the first set. Swarthmore closed to one after trailing 18-14 and against after falling behind 23-19. At 23-22, freshman
Kelly Tornetta stopped the Garnet run with a kill, and she finished off the set with another kill on the next point. Tornetta recorded kills on all four of her attempts in the first set.
Swarthmore tied the match with a 25-18 win in the second set. The Mules appeared to have the upper hand in the third set after back-to-back kills by senior
Erin Murphy put them up 11-7. After a Garnet timeout, freshman
Shannon Hubert served an ace to make it 12-7, but it was all Swarthmore after that. The Garnet closed the set on an 18-2 run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Garnet retained the momentum in the fourth set, jumping out to an 18-6 lead and going on to win, 25-17.
Senior
Katherine Boll led Muhlenberg with nine kills, while Hubert finished with 28 assists, four aces and seven digs. Junior
Elizabeth Garrison had 23 digs.
Last year, Swarthmore won the regular-season meeting with Muhlenberg, but the Mules prevailed in the postseason to reach the CC championship match for the second straight year.
