Junior
Gennaro Cerminara captured the gold medal as one of three placewinners for Muhlenberg wrestling at the Centennial Conference Championships.
Â

CerminaraÂ
(pictured above, left) earned a first-period pin in his opening match and then won by decision over a Gettysburg foe to reach the finals. Battling against a Merchant Marine opponent in the final, Cerminara matched his opponent at 5-5 through regulation. The first overtime period produced no score changes, but the Merchant Marine wrestler escaped to go up 6-5 in the second extra period.
Â
Starting from the down position in the third tiebreaker round, Cerminara stood up and backed his opponent down into the mat to secure the pin and the bout victory. The individual CC title is the first for a Mule wrestler since 2009. Cerminara is now 29-9 this season with 16 pins, the most ever by a Mule wrestler in a season, and he needs one more victory to match his total from last season.
Â

Sophomores
Austin Sherman (133) and
Dylan Schwartz (165) each placed third in their brackets, earning their first-ever CC medals.
Sherman
(pictured right) won by major decision over a Gettysburg wrestler before dropping a close decision in the semifinals. The sophomore battled back for back-to-back decision victories, 3-1 and 6-2, to earn the bronze medal. Sherman improved his season record to 27-14.
Â

Schwartz
(pictured left) opened his day with a third-period technical fall against a McDaniel foe, his 30th victory of the season. Schwartz later bounced back from a semifinal loss with a win by decision to reach the consolation final, where he dominated from start to finish to earn a 13-5 major decision victory and the bronze medal. The sophomore is now 32-11, and his 32 wins represent a Muhlenberg record for a sophomore.
Â
Four more wrestlers also won bouts after suffering first-round defeats. Sophomore
Nick Daza secured a major decision victory over a Gettysburg wrestler, 19-6, in his first consolation match, but Daza fell by the same score in his next bout to a Washington and Lee adversary.
Â
Senior
Ben Peck (149) matched his McDaniel opponent at 6-6 through two periods before securing a takedown and a two-point near fall on his way to a 10-9 victory in his first consolation match. Peck, however, could not overcome three takedowns by his Johns Hopkins opponent in his next match, falling 7-4.
Â
Sophomores
Mike Cannon (184) and
Scott Schaeffer (HWT) also earned decision wins in their first consolation bouts.
Schaeffer then took his next opponent down to the wire. Tied at 1-1, Schaeffer's opponent earned a takedown with 25 seconds left. Schaeffer escaped 10 seconds later but could not secure a takedown of his own, falling 3-2.
Â
The Mules as a team finished with 31.5 points and improved one spot from last year's CC Championships. Stevens captured the team title for the fourth consecutive season.
