The Muhlenberg volleyball team is sixth in the Mid-Atlantic in the first NCAA regional rankings of the 2017 season.
The NCAA regional rankings are conducted by the committees that ultimately shape the field for the NCAA Tournament. The complete Mid-Atlantic ranking, with records through October 17, is as follows:
1. Carnegie Mellon (22-1)
2. Johns Hopkins (19-2)
3. Stevenson (23-1)
4. Juniata (17-6)
5. Christopher Newport (19-3)
6. Muhlenberg (20-4)
7. Susquehanna (17-8)
8. Scranton (28-2)
9. Salisbury (14-7)
10. Mary Washington (12-9)
11. Swarthmore (15-6)
The rankings are based on record and strength of schedule. The NCAA will issue a public rankings again next week and then do a final ranking prior to championship selection.
This is the third time in the last four seasons that the Mules have earned a regional ranking, and it matches their highest ranking ever (they were also No. 6 in 2014).
Muhlenberg is 2-2 against other teams ranked in the region, with wins against Susquehanna and Scranton and losses to Johns Hopkins and Stevenson. The Mules play at Centennial Conference rival Swarthmore next Wednesday.
Muhlenberg also is 2-1 against teams ranked in the New York Region, defeating Ramapo (No. 8) and Stockton (No. 9) and falling to Clarkson (No. 4), and owns a win against Virginia Wesleyan, the seventh-ranked team in the South Region.
The Mules' strength-of-schedule rating of .600, which factors opponents' winning percentage and opponents' opponents' winning percentage, is among the best in the region.
In its first match as a regionally ranked team, Muhlenberg
defeated Franklin & Marshall in four sets to move into sole possession of second place in the CC.
