Internet service at Franklin & Marshall was shut down just before the start of the Muhlenberg women's basketball game there and was not restored until halftime – just in time for the Mules to do some restoring of their own.
Muhlenberg outscored the Diplomats 40-18 in the second half, ending the game on a 17-0 run to come away with a 72-58 win. The Mules (8-4, 6-2), who trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, held the Diplomats (5-7, 3-4) to five second-half field goals and five fourth-quarter points.
Junior
Brandi Vallely flirted with a quadruple-double, finishing with 22 points, eight assists, a career-high eight steals and seven rebounds. Junior
Christina Manning also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Muhlenberg trailed 58-55 two minutes into the fourth quarter and pitched a shutout the rest of the way. After a putback by senior
Maggie Zerbe brought the Mules to within a point, Vallely took an inbounds pass under her own basket, dribbled the length of the court and spun in the lane for a layup. She drew a foul and converted the free throw to complete the three-point play, giving Muhlenberg the lead for good with 5:58 remaining.
The score remained 60-58 until freshman
Ashley Polera recorded a steal – one of 20 for the Mules in the game – and dished on the break to sophomore
Sara Dilly, who was fouled and made two free throws with 2:58 to play.
Vallely
(pictured above) put her stamp on the rest of the game, twice driving in for layups after steals, dishing to sophomore
Carley Hamilton for a baseline jumper, and converting two free throws with 39.1 ticks showing after yet another steal.
Manning closed out the 17-0 run by sinking two free throws with 21.3 seconds left.
Hamilton finished with season highs of eight points and eight rebounds, and Polera also scored eight points. Junior
Chelsea Gary had seven points and nine boards, while Dilly notched five steals to go along with her six points. Junior
Jess Voltaggio gave the Mules a big lift off the bench, making all three of her shots to score six points in just four minutes.
Muhlenberg trailed 15-2 five minutes into the game and 33-16 midway through the second quarter. The Mules opened the second half on a 10-1 run to take their first lead at 42-41, and neither team led by more than four points after that until the final three minutes.
