Head coach
Alexa Keckler reached the 100-win milestone at Muhlenberg as the volleyball team went 3-1 at the season-opening Rowan Labor Day Invitational.
The Mules rebounded from a sweep at the hands of nationally ranked Eastern with sweeps of Emmanuel and Widener sandwiched around a five-set defeat of host Rowan. Sophomore
Shannon Hubert and freshman
Maggie Enestvedt were named to the all-tournament team.Â
Keckler, in her seventh season with the Mules, has a career record of 100-80, including an 84-41 (.672) mark since 2012. She spent five years at Gettysburg before coming to Muhlenberg and has a combined record of 196-135.
"We are all so grateful to have the opportunity to play under Coach Keckler and be a part of her great milestone," said senior
Elizabeth Garrison. "She has been a huge part of our success in this program, and we are excited to add more wins to her list."
Enestvedt led the Mules with 37 kills in the five matches, with a high of 18 against Rowan. Hubert averaged 6.57 assists per set, tied for second on the team with 40 digs and tied for third with 18 kills from her setter position.
Hubert served during a 10-0 run in the first set against Emmanuel that put the team on the right track. The Mules went on to win that set, 25-17, and built a 15-2 lead at the start of the second set en route to the sweep.Â
Muhlenberg won the first two sets against Rowan, 25-22, 25-19, but dropped the next two, 25-23 and 25-18. Freshman
Tara Register knocked down three kills early in the decisive fifth set to help stake the Mules to a 7-3 lead. Rowan cut the gap to 9-8 before two kills apiece by Enestvedt and Hubert gave Muhlenberg breathing room. Garrison finished off the thriller with one of 14 service aces she recorded in the tournament.
In addition to Enestvedt, sophomore
Kelly Tornetta (11) also reached double figure in kills, adding 11 digs for her second career double-double. Hubert narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 36 assists, 15 digs and 9 kills, while Garrison had 21 digs.
Enestvedt and Tornetta contributed 9 kills apiece in a 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 sweep of Widener.Â
The Muhlenberg defense held its four opponents at Rowan to .118 hitting. Garrison had a team-high 54 digs, while freshman
Madison Forrest topped the Mules with 6 blocks. Sophomore
Erica Schultz added 5 blocks to her 18 kills.
