Freshman Mark Gutierrez, sophomore Jaryd Flank and junior Lenny Smith all went 2-1 over the weekend as the Muhlenberg wrestling team wrapped up a challenging week of competition.

After taking on two-time defending Centennial Conference champion Ursinus (ranked 21st and 23rd in the two Division III polls) in their home opener on Wednesday, the Mules had to contend with Merchant Marine (four-time CC champion since 2008) on Saturday and Stevens (ranked 18th by D3wrestle.com) and New York University (ranked 24th by the NWCA) on Sunday. Muhlenberg dropped all three matches (32-18 to Merchant Marine, 35-16 to Stevens and 33-12 to NYU) but had some noteworthy results.

Gutierrez (pictured above) recorded a pin in the first period against Stevens after picking up a forfeit win against Merchant Marine. He is 5-1 at 133 this season.

Flank ended the weekend by notching his third pin of the season - one less than his total from all last year - in the NYU match. His only loss was to a Stevens wrestler who is receiving honorable mention in the D3wrestle.com 125-pound rankings.

Freshman 141-pounder Anthony Calantoni recorded his first career win with an 11-3 major decision against Stevens.

Senior Ian Gimbar's team-leading fifth pin of the season at 197, in the Stevens match, was sandwiched in between two close losses, one to a D3wrestle.com rankings contender from Merchant Marine. In that match, Gimbar (pictured left) scored a takedown with about 30 seconds left to tie the score at 7-7 but was later reversed.
