Photo GalleryThe Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its home and dual-meet season in impressive fashion, winning two of three matches.
The Mules won all but one contested bout in defeating Mount St. Vincent, 36-9, and Temple, 42-12. In between, they hung tough in several competitive bouts in a 35-10 loss to 22nd-ranked Wilkes.
Of the eight Mules who wrestled, seven won two bouts each and the eighth, freshman
Patrick Sockler, went 3-0 at 133. Sockler recorded a pin, a major decision and a forfeit win to improve his season record to a team-best 8-4.
Sockler's pin in just 103 seconds against Mount St. Vincent was the first of four consecutive first-period pins for Muhlenberg against Mount St. Vincent. Sophomore
Ben Peck recorded his first pin of the season at 141, and freshman
Robert Armus and senior
Che Chengsupanimit both flattened their opponents with 17 seconds left in the first period.
After freshman
Nely Montina held on for a 7-6 victory at 174 for his first career win, the last bout of the match offered even more drama. Freshman
Ethan Pentz was ahead 4-3 but effectively tied due to riding time when he scored a takedown with 25 seconds left in the third period for a 6-4 win.

Sockler had five takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near-fall in his 18-7 major decision to open the Wilkes match. Armus wrestled a strong bout at 149 against a Wilkes opponent ranked eighth in Division III. He scored a reversal in the second period and did not allow an offensive point in the final two periods of the 7-2 loss.
Freshman
Gennaro Cerminara provided the most entertaining bout of the day at 174. Trailing his Wilkes opponent 8-3 early in the second period, Cerminara closed to within 9-7 on a reversal and a takedown before finishing off the bout with a pin with 29 seconds left in the third period. It was his first career win.
Cerminara
(pictured at right) added another come-from-behind pin, this one in the first period, in the Temple match, which also featured pins from Peck, Armus (in just 48 seconds) and senior
Zach Goldrosen. Chengsupanimit
(pictured above) and Pentz won by decision.
