The Muhlenberg football team will host Stevenson in the inaugural Centennial-MAC Bowl Series on Saturday, November 21, at 12:00 noon.
The Bowl Series was created this year for the top two teams in each conference who were not selected for the NCAA Tournament. Muhlenberg tied for second in the Centennial Conference with Moravian and won the head-to-head matchup and the right to host. Similarly, Stevenson tied for second in the Middle Atlantic Conference with Delaware Valley and lost the head-to-head meeting. Delaware Valley will host Moravian in the other game of the series.
The Mules (8-2) are making their 12th postseason appearance (seven NCAA, four ECAC, one Centennial-MAC) in the last 16 years. Their last three postseason games have been decided by a total of six points, including a one-point thriller at Widener in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Muhlenberg ended the regular season with a six-game winning streak, capped by a
28-14 defeat of Moravian, and brings an eight-game home winning streak into the bowl game.
The Mustangs (8-2) are in just their fifth year as a varsity program. Last year, they made their postseason debut, defeating Bethany, 29-7, in the ECAC Southeast Bowl. Stevenson earned an NCAA regional ranking earlier this season, and its only two losses are by a combined seven points to Delaware Valley and MAC champion Albright.
The two teams have a common opponent in Wilkes. The Mules
won 35-7 in their season opener, and the Mustangs posted a 31-14 win in their eighth game.
Stevenson rolled up 653 yards of total offense in its 48-25 win against FDU-Florham on Saturday, with 460 of the yards coming on the ground. The Mustang rushing attack will go up against a Mule defense that ranks ninth in Division III against the run, allowing just 77.4 yards per game. Muhlenberg has allowed only 92 total rushing yards in the last three weeks while going against two teams (Dickinson and Moravian) that came in averaging more than 195 rushing yards per game.
Muhlenberg also ranks 15th in Division III in total defense (268.9 yards per game) and ninth in average time of possession (33:47).
Stevenson leads Division III with 26 interceptions and is plus-20 (second in the nation) in turnover margin. The Mustangs, who have picked off at least one pass in every game this season, also are 14th in pass efficiency defense (94.87 rating) and 25th in total defense (286.8 yards per game).
Tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $2 for students (elementary through college). Children under 6 are admitted free. In coordination with the Division III SAAC partnership with Special Olympics, 25 percent of the ticket revenue generated during the Bowl Series will be donated to the organization. Special Olympics athletes will be admitted free.
