Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Announced

Muhlenberg College will induct four individuals, one relay team and one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame in April.

Scheduled to take their place among the College's greats are (clockwise from top left above) Meghan Courtney Hoagland '07, Julie Lauro Rios '06, Chris Reed '03, Jim Skidmore '54, the 2003 men's track and field distance medley relay team and the 1980 football team.

Courtney was the first All-American in the history of the Muhlenberg women's basketball program, receiving honorable mention in 2007, when she also was named Centennial Conference player of the year. She averaged 15.3 points and 9.4 rebounds that season, leading the Mules in both categories for the second year in a row.

A four-year letterwinner and first-team All-CC selection in 2006 and 2007, Courtney finished her career with 1,076 points – at the time, third on the program's all-time scoring list. She still ranks in the top 10 in points (eighth), rebounds (sixth with 665) and blocked shots (fifth with 112). During Courtney's career, Muhlenberg was 75-31 and won the 2006 CC championship.

Lauro was the first All-American in Muhlenberg volleyball history and remains the only Mule named to the All-CC first team all four years. A two-time all-region selection, she holds the school record for career kills with 1,793, a total that ranks second in CC history.

Lauro also holds school records for kills per set in a career (4.18), kills per set in a season (4.99) and kills in a four-set match (31). She owns four of the top five single-season marks for kills in program history. Lauro accumulated 1,326 digs during her career and is one of only three Muhlenberg players with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She also ranks ninth in program history with 210 career blocks.

Reed was a four-year letterwinner as a kicker for the football team and saved his best for last, earning first-team All-America and first-team All-CC honors as a senior. He led all Division III kickers in field goals made (a school-record 16) and points (97) in 2002, booting two field goals of 49 yards and earning an invite to the Aztec Bowl, the Division III all-star game played in Mexico.

At the time of his graduation, Reed held school career records for points scored by kicking (202) and PATs made (124), season marks for points scored by kicking, PATs (49) and field goals and game records for points scored by kicking (18) and field goals (4, tied). He also was named to the All-CC second team as a junior.
Skidmore, an honorary inductee, was a member of the undefeated 1950 freshman football team and played quarterback for the varsity team for three years. In 1951, he threw a 90-yard touchdown pass, setting a school record that would last for 60 years.

Since his graduation, Skidmore has made a tremendous impact as a passionate supporter and friend of Muhlenberg athletics. He serves as athletic liaison to the Board of Trustees and is a member of the Campus Committee for Fitness and Athletics. He promotes the College to high school students throughout his home state of New Jersey, assisting coaches in their recruiting efforts.

The 2003 distance medley relay team, consisting of Will Elson, Ben Phillips, Josh Cohen and Brian Cash, finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, giving the Muhlenberg track and field program its first All-Americans. The foursome took first place at the ECAC Championships and had the fastest time in Division III during the season, breaking the previous school record by almost 30 seconds.

The 1980 football team finished with a record of 8-1 – the best record by a Mule team in a 60-year span from 1948 to 2007 – in Frank Marino's final season as head coach. The team earned the nickname "Kardiac Kulans" after winning several games in dramatic fashion, including one after trailing Johns Hopkins 38-14 with 11 minutes left on a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. Of the team's eight wins, two were by one point, one by two points and two by three points. Muhlenberg was ninth in the final Lambert Poll, which ranked all Division III football teams in the East.

Hall of Fame Weekend is scheduled for April 8-10, 2016, with the induction ceremony slated for Saturday, April 9.
